The government provides additional funding to schools to improve provision of physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools. This funding - provided jointly by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport – has been allocated to primary school head teachers.
This funding is ring-fenced and therefore can only be spent on provision of PE and sport in schools.
Purpose of funding
Schools must spend the additional funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but schools have been given the freedom to choose how they do this. A list of possible uses has been suggested.
Wheelock Primary School chooses to use this funding to ensure all children have access to a wide variety of sports and competitions, and swimming opportunities.
Our aim is to:
- increase pupils’ participation in the sports and physical activities
- provide a wider range of after school activities/clubs for pupils
- offer all Key Stage 2 children swimming lessons once a year
- enable all children in Years 5 & 6 the opportunity to take part in a catch-up swimming project to enable all children to be able to swim 25m. This is in line with the government guidelines for primary aged pupils to be able to swim at least 25m by the time they leave primary school.
Planned Spending
- Teaching staff will have access to high-quality CPD from an internal sports coach. This will have a direct impact on the quality of teaching and learning in PE.
- Children will have a wider provision of sports coaching which will lead to a greater number of children accessing after school clubs.
- All children across the school will have the experience of specific coaching in a variety of sports and skills.
