Attendance at Wheelock Primary School
At Wheelock Primary School, we believe that every day counts. Good attendance plays a crucial role in helping children achieve their full potential, build positive friendships, develop confidence, and enjoy the wide range of opportunities that school life offers.
We are committed to working in partnership with families to ensure every child attends school regularly. Our expectation is that all pupils achieve a minimum attendance of 96%.
We have a robust attendance monitoring system in place which allows us to identify concerns early, provide support where needed, and work closely with families to improve attendance. Where attendance remains a concern and support is not engaged with, we may challenge decisions that have a negative impact on a child's attendance and education.
If Your Child's Attendance Declines
Should your child's attendance fall below our expected level, we will follow these steps:
- Letter 1 – Sent when attendance falls below 96% to make families aware of the concern.
- Letter 2 and Attendance Improvement Plan – If attendance does not improve, we will work together to identify barriers and agree actions to support better attendance.
- Letter 3 and Attendance Meeting – A meeting with school leaders to discuss concerns and explore further support.
- Notice to Improve – If attendance continues to decline, the Local Authority may become involved.
Reporting Your Child's Absence
If your child is unable to attend school, please notify the school on each day of absence by telephone or email:
- Telephone: 01270 845911
- Email: office@wheelock.cheshire.sch.uk
- Report an absence via website: Absence Reporting | Wheelock Primary School
You must report your child's absence every day, even if the reason for absence remains the same.
As outlined in our Attendance Policy and in line with Department for Education guidance, leave of absence during term time will only be authorised in exceptional circumstances. If you believe your child requires leave during term time, please discuss this with the school as early as possible so that we can advise you on the correct process.
Please be aware that unauthorised absences may result in further action being taken, including the issuing of a Penalty Notice by the Local Authority.
