PE and Sport Curriculum
At Wheelock, Physical Education is taught by Sports Professionals from the Sports Coaching Group. The coaches use the PE Passport to provide structured, progressive lessons. The aim is to provide high quality teaching, ensuring all children participate in fun and engaging lessons. It is expected that PE lessons are safe and well planned for, with progression and involvement of all pupils. In addition to their weekly lesson with Sports Coaching Group, the children will engage in an active session with their class teacher which is carefully planned for using the PE Passport.
Within lessons, children have the opportunity to participate in individual or team activities, which will continue to develop a range of social skills and aid development of teamwork. Lessons are designed to develop the fundamental physical skills in KS1, then continue to build on these, year on year.
We aim for children to develop life transferable skills, and to understand the importance of regular physical activity on our physical and mental wellbeing. Through P.E lessons children will build self-confidence and increase levels of self-esteem as they develop their own independence and resilience to challenges.
At Wheelock the children have a daily ‘Golden Mile’ session aimed at improving children’s stamina, fitness and health. Children will have the opportunity to take part in competitive scenarios within lessons, through inter-house competitions and when representing the school in a variety of leagues and tournaments throughout the year.
Children can access extra opportunities to learn, practise and be active through extra-curricular clubs led by teachers and also Sports Coaching Group.
Children who attend ‘The Hive’ have the opportunity to be active as they have a member of Sports Coaching Group running structured sports sessions after school.
Children in Year 3 and 4 take part in a block of swimming using a pop-up pool. The aim is that they are all confident in the water and can swim proficiently over 25m. The children who have not achieved this will be offered catch up sessions in Year 5 and 6.
Children in Year 6 are offered the opportunity to go on a week-long outdoor and adventurous residential where they take part in a wide variety of activities aimed at building self-confidence, teamwork and risk taking, overcoming fears and being more independent.
Impact
At Wheelock we aim to help motivate children to participate in a variety of sports through quality teaching that is engaging and fun. From our lessons, our children learn to take responsibility for their own health and fitness and that many will also enjoy the success of competitive sports. We equip our children with the necessary skills and a love of sports. They will hopefully grow to live happy and healthy lives utilising the skills and knowledge acquired through Physical Education.
Assessment
Physical Education will be assessed and tracked using Sports Coaching Groups PE Passport. Using the PE Passport, careful monitoring of the progress of individuals, groups, classes and year groups can be undertaken.
