Reading at Wheelock

At Wheelock School we believe that not only should all our children be readers but that they should be confident, independent and enthusiastic readers! We work hard as a school to give each child the support they need when they need it. We have recently invested in a new online reading programme called Reading Eggs/ Reading Eggspress to support children that class teachers feel would benefit from additional input.  The programme offers an individualised progression of lessons and activities to enable children to make progress at their own pace.  We also spend time and train as a staff team to spread professional knowledge about reading and share this with parents and carers.

Reading Mentors

We have a group of volunteer reading mentors who come in to school on either a Wednesday or Thursday afternoon to hear our Year 1 and 2 children read. Our Literacy Co-ordinator runs training sessions for anyone interested in becoming a volunteer. Please note all volunteers are required to sign a letter of confidentiality and complete DBS checks. If you are interested in joining the team please see Miss Christie.

Reading Buddies

Some children in Year 2 have a Year 6 reading buddy who works with them once a week to support them with their reading. As well as benefitting the children's reading, the system also helps to nurture the school's sense of community.
