EYFS Curriculum

Welcome to the Foundation Stage

The Foundation Stage teachers are Mrs French, Mrs Grimson and Mr Hollings. We also have teaching assistants who work with us. They are Mrs Stirk, Miss Dunn and Mrs Lewis. Mrs Critchley also woks with us some afternoons.

The following overview will give you a brief flavour of what the children will experience during their year in the Foundation Stage. At Wheelock Primary the children learn through continuous play provision and are able to choose their own activities and whom they play with for a lot of the day. They also complete 'jobs' or learning tasks with an adult during the day, have a whole class maths and literacy input, a daily handwriting session and a daily phonics session.

The EYFS is based upon four principles:

  • A Unique Child

  • Positive Relationships

  • Enabling Environments

  • Learning and Development

The Early Years Curriculum is divided into three Prime Areas of learning:

  • Communication and Language
  • Personal Social and Emotional Development
  • Physical Development

And four Specific Areas of learning:

  • Literacy
  • Maths
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

Most of our learning is cross curricular and takes place both inside and outside.

Our drivers

At Wheelock our learning is underpinned and taught through our four curriculum drivers; Creativity, Challenge, Individuality and Community. Are drivers and values are thread through our school life and supported by the children, staff and community.

As a school we ensure that our curriculum gives our children the best outcomes academically and also as a individual, given them skills to hold on to throughout their education.
